Justin Hill’s Bulldogs Come Back to Stun South Carolina, 74-69

The Georgia Bulldogs men’s basketball team took down South Carolina by a score of 74-69 for their second straight road win in conference play. Silas Demary led the Bulldogs in scoring with 15 points. RJ Melendez finished the night with 12 points, marking his third straight game with double-digit points.

In the first half, the Bulldogs managed to keep the Gamecocks from gaining too much momentum heading into halftime. Georgia trailed by six with 4:52 left in the half, but rallied for a 10-0 run due to eight quick points from RJ Melendez. The Bulldogs struggled from behind the arc, going 2-9 in the first half. South Carolina led Georgia 34-33 at the break.

The Gamecocks came out hot to start the second half, extending their lead to nine with 14:05 left. Justin Hill led the Bulldogs on a 5-0 scoring run to once again cut the lead to three with 12 minutes to go. This proved to be the turning point in the game. With just over nine minutes left, center Frank Anselem-Ibe knocked down a layup to give the Dawgs the lead. Soon after, Jabri Abdur-Rahim drained a three-pointer to extend the lead to seven with 6:37 remaining. South Carolina clawed their way back in a hurry, trailing by two after a successful three-pointer by Meechie Johnson Jr. But with 43 seconds left, Justin Hill scored his ninth point of the night with a game-sealing jump shot, making the score 70-64.

 

 

 

 

Georgia improves to 13-4 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. They will have their toughest game of the season this weekend as they travel to Lexington, KY for a matchup with John Calipari’s Wildcats.
