Kevin Butler’s Players of the Game: Georgia vs. Mississippi State 2024

Offensive Player

Arian Smith – The senior from Lakeland, Florida continues to be the spark for Georgia’s offense that needs it greatly. In Saturday’s game versus Mississippi State, Smith again led in receiving with 134 yards and a huge touchdown catch of 42 yards to put the Bulldogs up for good. Arian has the ability to stretch the field vertically, which opens up routes underneath the safeties. In order to beat Texas, we are going to have to have a game from Arian where he can control the defensive backs for Texas and not have them control him. I like our chances with Arian in the lead position.

Defensive Player

Malaki Starks- The Junior defensive back from Jefferson High School just outside of Athens had one of his best defensive games with seven solo tackles. Starks is hard to beat through the air, and recently, teams have tried to run towards him to keep him off balance. Saturday, Starks turned the scales on the offensive team trying to come at him with his physical tackling and speed. His raw talent is unmatched as he is one of the best athletes on the field. Texas has receivers that can hurt you deep, and we need Starks to have his best game ever, leading the Bulldogs to victory in Austin, Texas.

Special team Player

Beau Gardner – When we talk about transfers that make an impact on the team, some people would never think to look at the long snapper; however, Coach Kirby Smart is always looking to get better at every position. We did just that with the graduate transfer from UCLA in Gardner. His consistent snaps have relieved the Bulldogs of worries when attempting extra points and field goals. The 6‘5“ graduate has great size and speed to get downfield and cover, which is a big plus for the Bulldogs this year. Gardner had a lot of options of where he could go play, and the Bulldog Nation is proud to have him leading the way on special teams with his consistent play every game.

Unsung Hero of the Game

Georgia football team – The Georgia football team has a roster of 90 young men, trying to wear the beautiful red helmet while they play Between the Hedges at Georgia. That’s not always how it plays out for many players. Georgia has not gone terribly deep into the depth chart this year, and a lot of guys have not gotten time on the field. Those players are my unsung hero award winners this week because without them our first and second string would not be ready to compete in the SEC. Those players that do not get a lot of game time are the backbone of the Bulldog team, providing the only way to prepare week in and week out. We should never take them for granted because they are our foundation. Every one of them is a Damn Good Dawg.
