Kevin Butler’s Players of the Game

Offensive Player

Oscar Delp – The junior from West Forsyth High School in Cumming, Georgia made us forget about the great Brock Bowers in the pivotal game against Tennessee. At 6’5, 245 pounds, Oscar is a force on the field as a blocker and showed his talent as a receiver Saturday night. Oscar had four receptions for 56 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to victory. As a caller said on our Sunday brunch show, “I love tight ends!” Well, I do too when they don’t drop a ball and Oscar did just that Saturday night. When receivers catch the balls, the confidence grows in Carson Beck and that’s how teamwork wins games.

Defensive Player

Smael Mondon. Jr. – I have missed smiling Smael! It was good to see Mondon back in the game and healthy. His physical play and leadership has truly been missed by a defense that has gone through the toughest schedule in all of college football this year. Seven solo tackles and one assist complemented by a sack for a loss led the Georgia defense to a heck of turnaround in seven days. Smael Mondon tackles physically and owns his space on the field, which propels Georgia to play at a higher level. I’m all smiles.

Special Team Player

Brett Thorson – That’s right I’m going back down under for some more thunder! We’ve given this award to Brett before, but this week it’s for his tenacious tackling that I am naming him the Special Teams Player of the Week. It’s been a couple of years since someone gained a positive yard against our team on a punt return, and the Vols just about took it to the house Saturday in a play that could’ve changed the game. However, to go around the world you gotta go through Australia and Thorson was having none of that. His upper body slam tackle on Carter stopped the Vols in their tracks, which would’ve been their only opportunity to score in the second half. Great job Thorson, but let’s stick to punting, not tackling.

Unsung Hero of the Game

The Red and Black Faithful – Well, being back Between the Hedges makes our unsung hero very easy for the game against the Tennessee Volunteers. The unsung hero goes to the greatest college crowd in America, the Georgia Bulldog fans. Challenge the fans, and the fans responded by creating an atmosphere that was just too big for the ugly orange. Offside penalties, miscommunication were opportunities fostered by the atmosphere the Georgia fans created. That was the atmosphere that constantly tapped on the volunteers helmet throughout the game. When you have a home crowd like Georgia does, it truly makes a difference, and for that I’m thankful for our crowd, and I know Kirby Smart was glad to be back in the comfort of Sanford Stadium playing their hearts out on Dooley Field!
