Kevin Butler, former University of Georgia legendary kicker and a member of the Georgia radio broadcast team, will each week during the 2015 football season select his offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week for Bulldawg Illustrated. Here are Butler’s selections and reasons why for the Bulldogs’ 48-6 win over Southern University Saturday.

OFFENSE

Senior wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell, who helped spark the Georgia offense by catching five passes for 96 yards — barely missing the 100-yard receiving mark for a second straight game —including a 23-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Greyson Lambert.

The fifth year senior from Valdosta is developing into one of the best receivers in the SEC,” said Butler. “After battling back from two consecutive knee injuries, Malcolm is the heart and soul of a very talented offense for UGA. Saturday’s performance was a great indicator, 5 catches for 96 yards and one TD. The most impressive play might have been his touchdown (for 39 yards) that was called back and then on the same drive, Mitchell scored on a 23-yard pass from Lambert. Malcolm is playing big and strong and that is a true blessing for UGA.”

DEFENSE

Junior inside linebacker Tim Kimbrough, who recorded a team-tying high of five tackles to help lead a Georgia defensive performance that limited the Jaguars to just one touchdown, 105 yards rushing and 79 yards passing.

“The junior linebacker from Indianapolis had one active performance against Southern,” said Butler. “Leading the defense in tackles with 15 total including 2 solos proves that the Dawgs are deep at linebacker. Tying his career high of 5 tackles against Charleston Southern last year, Tim is playing hard to get time and is really making a mark for a young, exciting defense. His play will be counted on against ‘Bama.”

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Bulldog kick coverage teams, which improved greatly over their showing in the South Carolina game by limiting Southern and its ace returner, Willie Quinn, to minimum yardage … with the exception of one 32-yard return by Quinn.

“The coverage team for the punt coverage and kickoff coverage teams gets this honor today,” said Butler. “The special teams have been the most inconsistent phase of the Georgia attack this year. With Willie Quinn the most dangerous player for Southern, our special team coverage units were great. There were a few too many yards on a couple of kicks but, overall, the units won the battle. Great hustle by Walker, DeLoach, Parrish, Roundtree, Amaechi and the rest of the crew will play a huge factor in winning the specialty team war with Alabama. In order to beat ‘Bama, UGA will have to win the specialty team challenges by eliminating extra return yards. Cover hard men … we are going to need that type of hustle!“
