During his G-Day postgame press conference, Kirby Smart was asked by Bulldawg Illustrated’s Savannah Richardson to comment on true freshman Richard LeCounte. LeCounte was the game’s leading tackler, and Kirby began his remarks by pointing out, “…that’s not a good sign when your safety is your leading tackler.”
Based on the smile on Kirby’s face as he talked about his early enrollee safety, the head coach likes what he has seen from the young defensive back. After leading with the warning about safeties being leading tacklers, Smart continued with his assessment of the high school All-American from Liberty County.
“He has done that all spring. He’s a see-ball/hit-ball guy. I mean, I love coaching him. I asked him the same question every day at the start of the meeting, and every day at the start of the meeting he gives me a different answer – and I’m like, ‘Richard, I asked you that yesterday, I asked you that the day before,’ but what he does on the field is he runs fast, he tries to hit you, and he likes tackling. The guy likes playing football. Those kinds of guys you can make good safeties. He got to work to take care of his body, He’s got to get a little bigger this offseason, but I’m excited about Richard, and I think he’s going to be a good football player.”
Kirby’s remarks about Lecount begin at the 11:45 mark in the video below:
