During the College Football Playoff teleconference on Tuesday afternoon, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart confirmed that Memphis assistant coach Dan Lanning will replace Kevin Sherrer as the Bulldogs’ outside linebacker coach after the National Championship game.
 

The newest member of the Georgia staff is a native of Richmond, Missouri. Lanning graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri in 2008 where he played linebacker and earned two Bachelor of Science degrees in physical education and secondary education. He has also has a master’s degree in secondary administration from William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.

Lanning got his start in coaching at Park Hill South High School in Riverside, Missouri, from 2008-10, where he served as an as an assistant football coach with the special teams, defensive backs, and wide receivers. After Park Hill South High, Lanning was at Pittsburgh (2011), Arizona State (2012-13), and Sam Houston State (2014). He then worked for Kirby Smart as a graduate assistant on the defensive coaching staff at the University of Alabama in 2015. After his one year stint with the Crimson Tide, Lanning served as the inside linebackers coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the Memphis Tigers for the past two seasons in 2016 and 2017.

After Kirby confirmed Lanning as Sherrer’s replacement, he posted this message on his Twitter account on social media thanking the Memphis Tiger family;
