Matt Landers (15) – UGA Fall Camp – Practice No. 21 – Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017

Kirby Smart talked to the media on Tuesday afternoon after practice. He discussed Georgia’s upcoming opponent with South Carolina and the reveal of the College Football Playoff rankings. Smart mentioned a few players, but his comment on Matt Landers showed promise to the freshman’s future at Georgia.

Landers is a 6-5 and 195-pound wide receiver from Pinellas, Florida. Despite his size, the freshman is raw and needs some work, so Smart and receivers coach James Coley sent him to the scout team. Smart puts the freshman in a different number each week to signify the upcoming opponent’s main target on offense. As the season has advanced each week, Smart said the freshman’s progress improves. During the bye week, the head coach opted to pull Landers up from scout team but decided to hold off.

He’s a force to be reckoned with, I’ll be honest with you,” Smart states. “We talked long and hard in the off week about bringing him up. We gave him a lot of reps and let him work. He gives us a little something out there at wideout that we really don’t have, in that size, outside of Javon (Wims). But I don’t know if he’s ready yet. He’s got to mature a little bit. He’s got to continue to improve academically. But he’s tough on the scout team. He’s fast, he’s long and athletic. He’s going to be a good player if he keeps his head on straight.”

Smart’s comments give hope to Georgia’s future in regards to big receivers. Wim’s graduates this season and the Bulldogs will be looking to replace his production, size, and physicality.  If Landers continues to grow and improve, I believe he could be that receiver for Georgia.
