Mecole Hardman was projected as a defensive player as a recruit from Elbert Couty High School, however, his path to playing time at Georgia has seen him switch to offense. Now that he is settling in as an offensive threat, Coach Smart provided an update on his transition during his post-scrimmage presser.
I think he is gotten much more comfortable. I think he has gotten better ball security. He had a couple of plays today he flashed. He flashed on a punt return today. We’ve got a great battle going at punt return.
I think Mecole is getting more and more comfortable. He has still got to work on his pass-catching. It is not natural for him. He didn’t play receiver in high school. He caught it from a snap. It’s different from a snap them when they’re coming at you hit you. So, he continues to work on that. Mecole is going to be a good weapon for us, we feel like.
In addition, to his duties as a wide receiver and returner, Hardman has been taking reps from the quarterback position in the Wild Dawg formation. Clearly, as Smart said, the staff sees Mecole as one of the playmakers who must touch the ball often in 2017.
