Davin Bellamy donned the golden spikes after his sack strip that gave the Bulldogs their win over the Fighting Irish and coach Kirby Smart was happy to put those spikes on display.
The golden spikes are rewarded to each player on the defense that creates a turnover and the Bulldogs were unable to put this reward on display in the team’s week one victory over Appalachian State because the defense did not force a turnover.
The defense’s inability to cause a turnover in week one was something that defensive coordinator Mel Tucker made sure his players knew his feelings on in practice.
“Our players take a lot of pride in it, I’m just glad we finally got to bring it out,” said Smart. “We had it the first game and never got to show it, so coach Tucker was killing the defense after the first game.”
Coach Smart went on to mention how he thought it was a cool way to not only reward the players but also honor the Bulldogs fan base because of the spike squad that is seen in the front row of the Bulldogs student section during every home game.
The golden spikes are definitely a new exciting way to reward the defense for great play and the coaches will hope to give out the spikes more and more often as the season continues.
