Head coach Kirby Smart often gets asked about his quarterbacks. This time it was Justin Fields. Throughout the season the topic of whether Fields should get more playing time and why he isn’t getting just that. From not getting a significant snap during the LSU game to making key third downs against Kentucky and staying in for almost a whole series against Auburn, Fields playing time continues to increase.

Smart comments that the freshman continues to grow on the field and off it. Each week the head coach has another good thing to say about the youngster. However, it’s not always all good; Smart knows when it’s appropriate to critique the young quarterback as well.

“I see him growing. I see him getting opportunities to manage the game a little more. You got to see him do it probably a little more this time than he has before. And he had some freshman deals,” Smart notes. “He had the shot clock run out on him, and he had the scramble play that he’ll be the first to tell you he should have thrown it away. Those are the things that we see him do right in practice. We put time constraints on him, and he manages it well. And he’s made a lot of really good decisions in practice to throw the ball away; he didn’t in the game. So I mean, those are things he has to grow from, and he will, and he continues to get better.”

This week the team plays the Massachusetts Minutemen. It’ll be interesting to see how Smart utilizes the two quarterbacks against a lower tiered team. Fields could finally see some significant on-the-field training  Saturday, and it could be just what Georgia needs to have up its sleeve in the coming weeks.
