Kirby Smart spoke to the media about the progress of Matt Landers. The sophomore wideout performed on the scout team all last season and now he could compete for playing time, but what is the likelihood? Smart mentioned that the likelihood is unknown.
Smart notes that Landers is a talented receiver but he can struggle at times.
“Matt, he’s hot and cold,” Smart states. “Sometimes he struggles to get the signal and know what to do and know his assignment. He’s talented but he’s not a great special teams weapon and have addressed that with him.”
Smart continues onto say that for him to be a part of that core wide receivers group, he must do something on special teams. However, the head coach notes that Landers has something the other wideouts don’t. But even then, the sophomore must be elite.
“He has physical traits that our other wideouts don’t have, long, tall, vertical and that’s what we don’t have,” Smart comments. “He’s got to be elite at that in order to make the bus. I say bus, I’m talking 70 because he’s not going to be a big contributor on special teams because it’s just not what he’s really good at.”
The head coach finishes the question by saying Landers has his moments and can make those plays the team needs him to.
“He’s flash now,” Smart says. “Matt has made some plays that make you’d say, man, that’s a big-time play. So we’re hoping to get the best out of him.”
