Kirby Smart held his weekly press conference after day 17 of fall camp. The media addressed various questions. However, a topic that returned was the secondary. Smart’s repeated that the secondary is an area of concern since March. Now that the team is nine days away from the first game, the head coach doesn’t seem very confident in the unit.
The biggest concern in the secondary is the depth. According to Smart, that is. With players like Divaad Wilson and Tyrique McGhee out with injuries, Georgia doesn’t have room for many more injuries. However, the staff continues to rotate the healthy players and try them out to see they can play at multiple positions.
“The biggest concern would be depth. I’ve talked about the safeties and Tyrique (McGhee) being out for how long we don’t know. It puts us thin there.” Smart says. “We’ve been working Christopher Smith more at safety because we think he’s a really good athlete, not a real big fella but a good athlete and good tackler, so he’s worked some there. We got four or five corners that are competing and (Deandre) Baker is probably ahead and after that, you can put (Eric) Stokes, (Tyson) Campbell, (Ameer) Speed and Mark Webb all in the pool. Then at safety, you got J.R. Reed a little bit ahead and then Richard (LeCounte), Christopher Smith, Deangelo Gibbs, Otis (Reese) and Jarvis (Wilson), all those guys. We don’t have a lot of guys that have played. It was frustrating today because we didn’t play really good in the secondary. The youthfulness can be good because they’re eager to learn; they come in and meet extra but experience is valuable. We don’t have a lot of experience in some of the adjustments that you have to make. We challenge them and throw a lot at them.”
