In the new era of college football, the turnover of coaching and players is greater than it has ever been before. Each season teams see players and coaches come and go, but not at the rate that it is currently at. The biggest stress is being able to mesh together a new group of guys and make sure they’re focused on the standard that head coach Kirby Smart sets for this program.
Coach Smart began the opening press conference by saying his goals for the spring are to “expand our roster of winning football players.” Smart’s main priority before they become winners as a group, is to make sure each individual player is all in and able to have a winning mentality.
Coach Smart has confidence with the four new position coaches that will be coming in this season. Coach Donte Williams and coach James Coley have already been through the ropes, with Williams coaching during the bowl game practices and Coley being on staff before. coach Robinson and coach Crawford have each been in programs that were similar to coach Smart’s program, which made him say that he has no “worry about the standard of excellence.”
On the players side, Carson Beck and the coaching staff are ready for him to take a huge leap this year. Carson Beck is ready to grow not only as a player, but as a teammate. Coach Smart said “you earn that. You don’t just inherit that,” when it comes to being a leader on the team, and it seems that Beck is ready to earn that role. He quoted “I think the biggest thing for me is continuously building my confidence level,” and that this spring he is able to do that more now that he won’t be competing for a spot. He says he can focus on “competing with myself,” which also allows him to help out the new players as they get adjusted.
Spring has begun and the Dawgs are taking shape, as they open the book to the first chapter of the 2024-25 football season. With exciting new faces in Athens, the bar is set high for this years team, but that’s a challenge they’re willing to take on.
