Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart was very pleased with the second scrimmage of the season and added that it was an improvement from last Saturday.

“I thought we had a much more spirited scrimmage. It started out a lot faster, a lot more competitive, I thought both ones units played better, which means the two units probably didn’t play as well,” Smart said. “There were some explosive plays in the scrimmage and I was proud of the competitive toughness.”

Smart also noted that during the 7-on-7 scrimmage that the guys making the explosive plays were ones that you might see play a bigger role on the field this season. Especially the receiving core, in which he praised.

“The receivers. A lot of the receivers. Last scrimmage it seemed like a lot of the backs, the backfield, had some big plays,” he said. It was the wideouts as a group. Cager had one. George had one. Tyler Simmons had one. Trey Blount had one. We had several guys have explosive plays.“

Georgia also had a few players missing from today’s scrimmage as well. It was documented that freshman linebacker Nakobe Dean wasn’t at practice today, and Smart commented that he was banged up, but the staff expects him to return to practice soon. Smart also talked about senior Julian Rochester, and how he’s progressed after coming off an ACL injury.

“Julian is coming off the ACL repair and he’s practiced every day. He does some periods with us and he does other periods with a trainer where he runs and gets his mileage up. Not as much contact stuff. He’s doing a little bit of both.”

D’Andre Swift, who missed a little bit of practice Tuesday, was at practice today and showed no signs of any injury. Smart said he believes that Swift is 100 percent. He even pointed out that Swift has taken more of a leadership role within the huddle. He also hinted that Brian Herrien is running good as well.

Smart also said the defensive line has been “rolling” and noted how impressed he has been with them during fall camp.

“There’s not one dominant player on that defensive front or defensive line. There’s a lot of good, solid players. A lot of experience. It just seems like we’ve got guys that have played a lot of football that are out there.”
