Kirby Smart talks about Mel Tucker’s defense during the press conference on Tuesday. The head coach praised Tucker for his ability to get guys buying into the program. Smart also complimented Tucker on his hard work and tenacity.
Tucker is in his second season as Georgia’s defensive coordinator and secondary’s coach. He prides himself on good defense and his defense has risen to that task so far. Smart talked about how Tucker commands respect and how the players follow his judgment.
“Mel’s a great leader. He commands great respect,” Smart said. “Players really follow Mel’s lead. He does a tremendous job of playing game planning, with X and Oing and calling the game. More important than that, he’s a very loyal soldier that helps our guys out. If guys are emotionally struggling or their confidence is struggling, he’s able to go pep em up. And they follow his lead. So I think he’d do a tremendous job (as a head coach). He was an interim head coach before and I know he will do a tremendous job given the opportunity.”
For the second time this week, Smart praised Tucker for his defensive performance. As the season continues, it’ll be interesting to see how he can maintain this for the next season.
