Head football Coach Kirby Smart addressed the media Wednesday afternoon after day 21 of fall camp. One particular topic of note was on the Bulldog wide receivers and where the position group stands nine days out from the season opener.
 
With such a talented group, who will play in the first game versus Appalachian State? Smart answers by stating how competitive the group is as a whole and how important they are to the team. He mentioned there isn’t a player yet that has stepped up to be the “lead dog”. But Smart did praise the wide outs for their work on special teams and talked about how crucial that is, which will lead to playing time for many of them.
 
 

“It’s real competitive. Those battles will come down to special teams more than it will come down to wide receiver,” Smart said. “Ahkil (Crumpton) has shown in the last couple of days that he catches everything thrown to him. He’s done really well. Mecole (Hardman) has stepped up and made some plays. Mark Webb has made some plays. Jayson Stanley has made a few plays. Nobody has really taken the bull by the horns and said ‘I’m the lead dog,’ so there’s a lot of competition at those positions. I’m most proud of those guys on special teams. They are like our core unit. It used to be your DBs (defensive backs) were your core unit but right now it’s our wide receivers. You always want to have a lead guy at receiver but at the same time, the more competitive it is, the better.”

 
 
With the addition of five receivers in the 2017 class, Georgia now has a large receiving unit with some depth to it. There is a lot of talent in that group; so, Coach James Coley and Kirby Smart have their work cut out for them determining who will make the travel roster during away games.
