Against Missouri this past weekend third-year cornerback Kamari Lassiter switched positions and still found a way to hold nationally renowned Luther Burden to two catches and a whopping total of fourteen receiving yards on the day. It hasn’t been hard to advocate for his skills in coverage and the passing game, but after that performance, it’s certainly a lot easier. 

Now, as Lane Kiffin and his Rebels count the days until they’re off to Athens, Lassiter has to re-shift his focus and be prepared to take on Ole Miss’ rushing attack consisting of Quinshon Judkins, Ulysses Bentley IV, and quarterback Jaxson Dart. He explained to us yesterday that teams set their runners up to run at defensive backs to take advantage of what often is a size match up.

Though there’s not a lot he can do about his size being listed at six-foot-flat and coming in at 185 on a scale, Lassiter does a lot of prep studying runners and their styles. 

“You definitely have to study the backs because a lot of teams sometimes they like to get the corners to tackle,” Lassiter said yesterday. “Because a lot of teams view corners as the weaker links in run support.”

And you can see it in the way he plays. Though the national media isn’t doing the best covering him, amongst the Georgia faithful Lassiter has grown a reputation that embodies exactly what this defense prides itself on: physicality. 

Assuming he’s back at outside corner this weekend and not instructed to focus on one receiver in particular, he’ll be back in action and involved in run defense. And the timing couldn’t be better as Ole Miss seems to be the Dawg’s biggest match up of the regular season.
