After Georgia completes their Tuesday afternoon practice, Lorenzo Carter addresses some of the ‘trash talk’ coming from the Florida players that have made their way out of Gainesville and into the headlines. The senior also talks about the team’s leadership committee, and did you know that the 6 foot 6 and 242 lbs outside linebacker was a fan of the “Rugrats” show?
It is not uncommon for some trash talk to be fired across state lines during the week leading up to the Georgia-Florida game. A lot of it comes from fans but even the players of each of the respective teams get in on the banter sometimes. After all, the Bulldogs and Gators are bitter SEC East division rivals and that rivalry started long before the conference was split into divisions.
These two teams have been playing each other for over a century and cannot even agree on the date of the first game in the series. UGA says the first Georgia-Florida game was playing on October 15, 1904, a game in which the Dogs won 52-0 in Macon, while UF claims it was not until November 6th in 1915 in Jacksonville. The two Universities even disagree on the number of times the two have played each other. The Bulldogs say there have been 95 such meetings while the Gators say only 94.
This year, UGA players have been keeping their heads down and focusing on getting ready for the 96th Georgia-Florida game. While there has been no trash talk coming from the Bulldogs, the same cannot be said of the Gators. On Monday, Florida’s Chauncey Gardner, a freshman safety for the Gators, said Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm was successful because he throws “simple passes.”
“He’s throwing simple passes,” said Gardner. “I get it. Anybody can throw a slant. I get it. But like I said, we’re just playing football. If you call him the best quarterback, so be it, but he has to play Saturday. We’re going to see what his best attribute is.”
And Florida receiver Josh Hammond questioned the Bulldogs being ranked No. 3 in the country and opening as 14-point favorites over the Gators for Saturday’s game.
“They might be the No. 3 team in the country, but they can’t beat Florida,” said Hammond.
After Tuesday’s practice, Georgia senior outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter was asked if he had heard about what was said by some of the Florida players.
“A little bit of it gets back to us,” said Lo Carter. “But at the end of the day, nothing that you say is going to affect the outcome of the game. So we just kept preparing the way we’ve been preparing and let our football and let our helmets do the talking.”
Lorenzo was also asked if he considered it bullet board material and if it would be something he and his fellow Georiga teammates would think about when they take the field at EverBank Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
“That’s what it does,” said Lorenzo. “That’s what bulletin board material is. It’s just a little extra fire, but we don’t need that. We have enough fire and intrinsic motivation with the team that, anything else outside is noise that we block out.”
He added that trash talking is to be expected when it comes to playing a rival.
“Definitely. It’s a rivalry. You don’t expect anything less,” added Lo Carter. “There is going to be a lot of trash talking out on the field, too, but as long as we just keep going out there and playing football the way we’ve been playing, play physical and fast, all that stuff will take care of itself.
And what if Head Coach Kirby Smart found out Lo Carter or one of his teammates fired back with some trash talk of their own.
“I don’t know but I’m not trying to find out, though,” Lorenzo exclaimed with a smile.
Georgia will continue practicing and preparing for their Saturday game against SEC East rival Florida on Wednesday.
