On Tuesday, David Marshall and Julian Rochester spoke to the media about the defensive line as a whole and new coach, Trey Scott. However, their quotes about freshmen, Malik Herring, should peak your interest.

David Marshall made a small comment about Herring coming in as a freshman. He talked about the nerves that come with it and how different it is from high school.

“Starting out as a freshman you get nervous, he just needs to get more physical and run more plays and learn the defense,” Marshall stated.

Of course, as a freshman, there are learning curves and adjusting. However, sophomore defensive lineman, Julian Rochester sees Herring’s potential. Rochester said that Malik is the real deal and once he gets the schemes down he will be a play maker.

“Malik, he’s going hard. He’s the real deal,” Rochester says. “A great pass rusher, like Malik, is a great rusher. Then in the run game he’s getting a lot better. Malik is learning how to use his hands and strike out his hips. Pass Rushing is what he does and he’s really good at it.”

Malik Herring seems to be on the right track after 20 days under his belt. With Coach Scott’s technical style, he should be eating quarterbacks lunches soon. The youngster is the sole, defensive linemen in the 2017 class, and how he would do was something many wondered about. Rochester helped the curious out and praised him for his progress. It’ll be interesting to watch his growth this season and see if he can push for some playing time.
