Georgia senior Marie-Therese Obst has been named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week following her performance at the FSU Relays, according to a league announcement.
This also marked the second SEC weekly honor of Obst’s career. Last week, Obst was awarded the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Women’s Athlete of the Week as well as the conference accolade.
Obst, a native of Oslo, Norway, answered an opening foul in the javelin with a personal and school record mark of 201 feet, 1 inch to win her second straight meet by more than 16 feet. This mark currently leads the nation, made her the No. 4 all-time collegiate performer (three feet behind the collegiate record) and bumped her to No. 5 on the 2021 world list.
After opening the year at the Yellow Jacket Invitational (March 19-20) with a school record mark of 195 feet, Obst launched the second-longest throw before the NCAA Championships in collegiate history (since the javelin design change in 1999) and the earliest in history with her effort in Tallahassee. Obst’s fifth attempt in her series of 192-1 also would have kept her in the collegiate lead nationally.
