Georgia’s Anthony Edwards was named second-team mid-season All-America by The Sporting News on Thursday. Edwards was the only SEC player featured on the organization’s three, five-player teams.

Edwards, who is a 6-5, 225-pound and from Atlanta, is the nation’s leading scoring freshman and the only first-year player currently ranked among the top-50 scorers in Division I. His 19.1 ppg scoring average is No. 46 nationally and No. 2 in the SEC. Edwards has posted eight 20-point outputs in the Bulldogs’ 16 games to date, including a career-high 37 points against No. 3 Michigan State in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. His outburst against the Spartans, which featured a 33-point second half, represented the most points by a Georgia freshman in 45 seasons.

Edwards was named preseason All-America by at least four entities, and he is on the Watch List for every National Player of the Year Award. Last week, Edwards was included among the top-25 midseason candidates for the John R. Wooden Award.

Georgia improved to 10-6 overall and 9-1 at Stegeman Coliseum with last night’s 80-63 win over Tennessee. The Bulldogs are now averaging 9,429 fans at home this season, which is on pace to be the second-best average in school history. With five of Georgia’s remaining seven home games already sold out, the Bulldogs could challenge the program’s all-time average attendance mark of 9,857 in 2002-03.
