A Hollywood director couldn’t script a more dramatic ending.

Georgia, down by five, (73-78), with 00:22 to go, freshman Sahvir Wheeler gave the Bulldogs a chance with a layup at the 00:16 mark and then two free throws, closing the gap with Vanderbilt to one, (77-78), with just six ticks left on the clock. Anthony Edwards was quick to foul Scotty Pippen, Jr. as soon as Vandy inbounded the ball, only letting one second off the game clock. Pippen would go on to miss both free throws, and with just two short seconds to go, Jordan Harris tipped it the second missed free throw to Tyree Crump who rebounded the ball, drove down the hardwood, and let fly a clutch, three-pointer from beyond downtown at the buzzer to lift the Dawgs over the Dores’ 80-78.

While the senior is credited with the game-winning basket, and rightfully so, it wasn’t just Crump that was clutch. It was the Georgia team. Wheeler’s basket and two free throws, Edwards’ quick foul keeping Vanderbilt from running out the clock, Harris’ tipping the ball to Crump off the missed free throw… if those series of events don’t happen, Tyree doesn’t get the opportunity to take the game-winning shot. UGA men’s head coach Tom Crean talked about those plays in the final seconds in the postgame presser.

“We always want to stretch the game as much as you possibly can. That’s why the lay-up with Sahvir was such a big lay-up,” said head coach Tom Crean. “That stretches the game. What happens is you come down and you start looking at that scoreboard and start thinking ‘three, three, three,’ no. We’ve got to stretch the game…”

Anthony Edwards led the team in scoring once again with 19 points, and two other Georgia players also put up double digits with Jordan Harris right behind the freshman phenom with 17 points and Sahvir Wheeler with 11. Rashad Hammonds and Toumani Camara rounded out the rest of the starters with 8 points apiece. Including his game-winning buzzer-beater, Tyree Crump came off the bench with 8 points and Tye Fagan added another 6 along with Donnell Gresham, Jr.’s 3 off the bench for the Dawgs.

The win was the second in a row for Georgia after they upset No. 13 Auburn, 65-55, in Athens at Stegeman Coliseum on Wednesday, February 19th. With the victory, the Bulldogs move back to one game over .500 on the season at 14-13 overall and 4-13 in the SEC.

The Georgia men are back on the road next Wednesday, February 26th in Columbia to take on South Carolina at Colonial Life Arena. That game is set for a 6:30 p.m. ET tipoff on the SEC Network. The Bulldogs return home to Athens and Stegeman on Saturday, February 29th to host the Arkansas Razorbacks.
