The Georgia Bulldogs will step out of SEC play and venture to Manhattan, Kansas, on Saturday to face Kansas State in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

The matchup is one of 10 interconference contests that will dominate the ESPN family of nextworks throughout the day. It also is the most evenly matched. As of Thursday, the Wildcats and Bulldogs were No. 54 and No. 55 in the NCAA RPI, respectively.

The contest continues a travel-heavy portion of Georgia’s schedule which features five road outings in a seven-game span.

Georgia slipped to 12-7 overall and 3-5 in the SEC on Tuesday after dropping an 80-77, double-overtime heartbreaker to Arkansas.

Yante Maten, one of 25 players on the Midseason Watch List for the Wooden Award, leads the SEC in scoring at 19.9 ppg and is second in rebounding at 9.4 rpg.

Maten has been a picture of consistency for the Bulldogs.

In 19 games this season, he has 18 double-figure outings, with nine double-doubles and 10 20-point performances.

Over 82 games since the start of his sophomore year, Maten has 74 double-digit scoring performances, with 32 20-point and five 30-point outings, and 24 double-doubles.

“Turtle” Jackson is the Dogs’ second-leading scorer at 9.7 ppg, with 11 double-figure games. Juwan Parker is UGA’s second-best point producer in SEC action at 9.4 ppg.

Kansas State is 15-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big 12. Barry Brown (17.8 ppg) and Dean Wade (16.0 ppg) provide the Wildcats with a potent outside-inside scoring combo.

Series History: UGA vs. K-State

Kansas State owns a 2-1 edge in the series; however, Georgia won the only previous meeting in Manhattan.

UGA and K-State contested a home-and-home series in 2014-15 and 2015-16, with the road team winning each matchup.

Most recently on Dec. 4, 2015 in Athens, a late baseline jumper from Dean Wade lifted the Wildcats over Georgia, 68-66.

Georgia led by double digits several times in the first half, lastly at 37-26 before two Wesley Iwundu free throws with less than a second remaining cut the margin to 37-28.

State opened the second half with a 7-0 run and eventually outscored Georgia 40-29 in the period.

After Kansas State gained its first lead of the second half at 43-42 with 13:54 left, J.J. Frazier sparked a run and scored five points in a row as the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead at 49-47 just 3:02 later.

The remainder of the game went back-and-forth, with six ties and seven lead changes. Mike Edwards hit the front end of a one-and-one to tie the game, but Wade hit a 15-foot jumper that gave the Wildcats a 68-66 lead with 4.1 seconds on the clock.

Frazier was able to get off a potential game winner, but his long 3-point attempt ended up just short.

On New Year’s Eve 2014, Charles Mann scored 17 points, including two game-sealing free throws with five seconds left, as Georgia defeated Kansas State 50-46 in Manhattan.

The Bulldogs led by as much as 15 points midway through the second half. Kansas State, however, fought back to go up 44-41 with 3:39 left.

Georgia outscored the Wildcats 9-2 down the stretch. Perhaps the biggest bucket came when Nemanja Djurisic drilled a 3-pointer from atop the key with 1:07 left, putting the Bulldogs back on top with a 47-46 lead.

The other contest between Georgia and Kansas State was in Salt Lake City during the 1987 NCAA Tournament, an 82-79 overtime win for the Wildcats.

That matchup featured a showdown between two future NBA first-round draft picks. In the end, Kansas State’s Mitch Richmond scored 34 points and out-dueled Georgia’s Willie Anderson, who poured in 35.

A year later, Richmond was the No. 5 selection and Anderson went at No. 10 overall in the 1988 NBA Draft. Richmond was chosen by Golden State and played 14 seasons with the Warriors, Sacramento, Washington and the L.A. Lakers. San Antonio tabbed Anderson, who played nine years with the Spurs, Toronto, New York and Miami.
