The Georgia Bulldogs and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will square off in the basketball version of Clean Old-Fashioned Hate on Tuesday evening in Athens.
Georgia is 7-2 on the year, which equals the Bulldogs’ 2010-11 NCAA Tournament team for the best nine-game start during Mark Fox’s tenure in Athens. The Bulldogs’ win tally includes victories over a trio of 2017 NCAA Tournament teams – No. 21 Saint Mary’s on Nov. 26, Marquette on Dec. 2 and Winthrop on Dec. 4.
Yante Maten, a National Player of the Year candidate and preseason SEC Player of the Year honoree, leads Georgia with averages of 18.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Over his last 72 games (dating back to the beginning of his sophomore year), Maten has produced 65 double-digit scoring performances, with 26 20-point and four 30-point outings as well as 19 double-doubles.
Turtle Jackson provides a second a double-figure scoring average at 12.7 ppg. Jackson entered the season with two double-digit productions in 66 games but has scored 10-plus points in eight of Georgia’s first nine outings. He also upped his career high four times in the first five games, from 10 points beginning the year to 11 to 13 to 15 to 17 points against San Diego State.
Tech improved to 5-4 on the year with a Sunday victory over Florida A&M. That contest was the Jackets’ first with what was expected to be their starting lineup.
Tech features four double-digit scoring averages, although two of those have played an abbreviated schedule.
Josh Okogie, who logged his first action of the season against the Rattlers, is Tech’s leading scorer with 19 points against Florida A&M. Tadric Jackson, who missed the first three games, is averaging 15.8 points.
Ben Lammers and Jose Alvarado, the only Jackets to start all nine games, are contributing 13.3 and 12.8 points, respectively. Lammers adds a team-high 8.1 rebounds.
Series History: UGA vs. GT
Georgia Tech sports a 103-90 lead in the all-time series between the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets; however, Georgia possesses a healthy 53-30 advantage in games played here in Athens.
The Bulldogs have won the last two meetings, games which offered some historical inferences.
Last season in Atlanta, the Bulldogs bested Tech, 60-43. The 17-point margin of victory was Georgia’s most decisive win over the Jackets in Atlanta since a 55-38 decision on Dec. 6, 1980.
To find a larger margin of victory, you have to go back to a 69-13 win on 1/19/09…that being 1909.
Two years ago to the day in the last matchup in Athens, Georgia topped Tech 75-61 behind 35 points from J.J. Frazier, the most ever by a Bulldog against the Jackets.
Yante Maten and Frazier spearheaded the 60-43 win over Georgia Tech 364 days ago at McCamish Pavilion.
Maten contributed 16 points, while Frazier chipped in 15 points. Derek Ogbeide equaled what was then his career high with 11 points.
The Bulldogs led at the break 27-18 after holding the Jackets without a field goal for the final six minutes of the period and scoreless for the last 2:41.
Frazier opened up the second half with a transition 3-pointer to put Georgia up 30-18. Georgia Tech quickly added three baskets to pull within 30-24, but that would be the closest the Jackets would get.
