Georgia Treks To Seton Hall For First Road Outing of 2015-16

[su_spacer size=”40″] The Georgia Bulldogs take to the road for the first time this season on Saturday when they venture to Seton Hall for a 7:30 p.m. date at the Prudential Center.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia improved to 2-1 on the young season with a 49-46 victory over High Point on Thanksgiving Eve, wrapping up a challenging three-game homestand to open 2015-16. Previously, Georgia lost to Chattanooga in overtime before topping Murray State. The Mocs, Racers and Panthers all won 20 games last season. In fact, they combined to average nearly 25 wins (24.7) during 2014-15.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Kenny Gaines, a reigning SEC co-Player of the Week, paces a quartet of Bulldogs currently averaging double digits at 19.7 ppg. In addition, J.J. Frazier is chipping in 13.3 ppg and Charles Mann and Yante Maten both are contributing 10.7 ppg. Maten leads Georgia on the boards at 9.0 rpg.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Seton Hall sports a 4-1 record and four double-figure scorers as well. Isaiah Whitehead leads the Pirates offensively at 15.8 ppg – and averages an attention-getting 4.4 apg – followed by Desi Rodriguez (13.6 ppg), Khadeen Carrington (12.2 ppg) and Derrick Gordon (10.4 ppg). Angel Delgado is Seton Hall’s top rebounder at 8.8 rpg.

Series History With The Pirates

Georgia topped Seton Hall, 65-47, last Dec. 21 in Athens in the only previous meeting between the Bulldogs and Pirates.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Kenny Gaines and Charles Mann scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, to lead Georgia. J.J. Frazier came off the bench to add what were then career highs of 11 rebounds (still his top effort), seven assists and three steals (both since topped).
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs raced to a 41-22 halftime lead and maintained a relatively comfortable margin the rest of the way en route to a key rpi-boosting victory. Seton Hall’s 47-point output held up as the Pirates’ low tally for the 2014-15 campaign.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia is 6-9 all-time against teams currently competing with Seton Hall in the Big East. In addition to the 1-0 record against the Pirates, the Bulldogs are: 1-1 vs. Georgetown; 0-1 vs. Marquette; 1-2 vs. St. John’s (with the win coming in the 1983 “Sweet 16”); 2-2 vs. Villanova (including a win over the 1985 NCAA Champions); and 1-3 vs. Xavier.

Last Time Out

[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia built a double-digit halftime lead and then withstood a cold-shooting second stanza en route to a 49-46 victory over High Point on Wednesday in Athens.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “Dr. (James) Naismith is buried at a small cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas, not two miles from Allen Fieldhouse,” Mark Fox said as he opened his post-game press conference. “It’s a very small cemetery, and he rolled over in his grave tonight, with the way we played offensive basketball.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia won despite going just under 15 minutes without a made field goal. After Yante Maten’s tip-in with 17:30 left in the game, the Bulldogs’ missed 13 straight shots from the floor before Kenny Gaines’ short jumper in the lane with 2:35 left made it 44-39.
[su_spacer size=”40″] High Point’s John Brown cut the lead to one after a made jumper with under two minutes on the clock, but J.J. Frazier brought the score to 46-43 with a basket as the shot clock expired and 42 seconds to go.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Panthers again brought it within a point at 47-46 as 14 seconds remained. However, Charles Mann completed a perfect 8-of-8 evening at the line to return Georgia’s lead to three points.
[su_spacer size=”40″] A pair of Anthony Lindauer 3-pointer attempts to tie the game in the final 11 seconds fell off the mark.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Mann led the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Gaines followed with 12 points and Frazier notched 10. Frazier tied freshman E’Torrion Wilridge with a team-best eight rebounds.

Mann Does It All Against Panthers

[su_spacer size=”40″] It’s not uncommon to hear a comment like “He could play all five positions.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Against High Point, Charles Mann proved those capabilities were more than a claim as he played all five positions during his 31 minutes of PT. Mann played everything from point guard to post against the Panthers. Perhaps most impressive was his defensive effort in several matchups with John Brown, the nation’s No. 4 active scorer.

< 50 Victories Rare For UGA

[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia’s 49-46 victory over High Point marked just the third time the Bulldogs have won while scoring less than 50 points since the introduction of the shot clock in 1985.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia last won scoring fewer than 50 when it defeated South Carolina, 48-47, on Feb. 23, 2006. The Bulldogs’ only other sub-50 victories in that span both came against Mississippi State when the shot clock was set at 45 seconds – 49-35 on Feb. 20, 1988 and 48-41 on Jan. 17, 1987.

Gaines Earns SEC Honor

[su_spacer size=”40″] Kenny Gaines was tabbed as the SEC’s Co-Player of the Week on Monday, Nov. 23, three days after his career-high 35-point outburst against Murray State.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Gaines shared the weekly honor with Kentucky’s Tyler Ulis.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Gaines’ performance against the Racers was one of the top single-game efforts in Georgia Basketball history.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The 6-3, 205-pound senior from Atlanta accounted for 55.6 percent of the Bulldogs’ points in their 63-52 victory, including 64.7 percent in the second half (22 of 34). That represents the highest percentage of team offense by a Bulldog as far back as complete records are available (beginning with the 1960-61 season).
[su_spacer size=”40″] He also equaled the No. 15 single-game scoring output by a Bulldog and posted the No. 6 and No. 5 marks for 3-pointers made (7) and attempted (14), respectively.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Individually, Gaines, who was a first-team preseason All-SEC selection of league coaches, established career-high numbers for points (35), field goals made (10), field goals attempted (18), 3-pointers made (7) and 3-pointers attempted (14).

Maten Continues Bigger Boarding

[su_spacer size=”40″] Sophomore Yante Maten has two double-double and three double-figure rebounding performances in 35 games played as a Georgia Bulldog. All of those have come in the Bulldogs’ last six contests dating back to last season.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Maten recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 boards against South Carolina in the SEC Tournament last season. He opened this season with career-best tallies of 17 points and 13 rebounds versus Chattanooga before collecting a game-high10 caroms in the Murray State contest.

Georgia’s first OT Opener

Georgia’s overtime loss to Chattanooga on Nov. 13 represented the Bulldogs’ first OT opener in UGA’s 111 seasons of basketball.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The previous earliest OT action was in the second game of three campaigns.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In 1905-06, Georgia’s first-ever season of basketball, the Bulldogs lost to Georgia Tech, 12-11, in the second outing of a two-game schedule. In addition, Georgia defeated Tulane, 41-39, on Dec. 28, 1932 and TCU, 76-75, on Dec. 7, 1965.

Career Highs From Chattanooga

[su_spacer size=”40″] Five Bulldogs notched career-high statistical performances against Chattanooga.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Most notably, Yante Maten’s 17 points, 13 rebounds and 40 minutes all were the highest tallies in his UGA career. Those topped last season’s 13 points against both South Carolina and Kentucky, 10 boards versus South Carolina and 29 minutes against Kentucky.
[su_spacer size=”40″] J.J. Frazier dished out a career-best eight assists, passes which resulted in 20 points. Coupled with his 22 points, Frazier had an immediate hand in 42 of the Bulldogs’ 90 points on the night.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In addition, Charles Mann’s four steals equaled his most-ever recorded versus Gonzaga last season; Houston Kessler and Kenny Paul Geno equaled their career highs with a single blocked shot; and Geno also logged a career-high 35 minutes, besting his previous most of 21 MP against Missouri last season.

Return of The Mask

[su_spacer size=”40″] J.J. Frazier is playing with a protective mask on his face after suffering a slight nasal fracture in practice on Nov. 5, the day before the Bulldogs’ exhibition outing versus Armstrong State.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Frazier warmed up with the mask before the exhibition contest, but the decision ultimately was made to hold him out of action.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Last season, Frazier played six games with the protective mask after suffering a fractured orbital bone and concussion during a Feb. 14 matchup with Auburn. He missed Georgia’s next game and then played the final five regular-season contests and an SEC Tournament date with South Carolina before discarding the protective gear for the last two games of the year.

UGA’s All-SEC Tandem…

[su_spacer size=”40″] Kenny Gaines and Charles Mann were both named preseason first-team All-SEC in balloting of league coaches, becoming just the second duo of Bulldogs to earn first-team preseason honors since the recognition began prior to the 2004-05 season. Travis Leslie and Trey Thompkins were also first-team selections prior to 2010-11.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Mann became Georgia’s first-ever two-time first-team preseason All-SEC selection.

…Has Very Strong Ties

[su_spacer size=”40″] The Gaines-Mann duo has played a significant role since they arrived on campus in 2012. They have a combined 197 games played, 139 starts and 4,997 minutes played.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Much of that has been compiled together.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Gaines and Mann both have been in the starting five for 61 of the Bulldogs’ 69 contests since the beginning of the 2013-14 season, and throughout their careers they have played 1,536 minutes and 55 seconds together in Georgia uniforms. For the record, that’s 38 full games and 16:55 of another.

Most…Fouls…Ever

[su_spacer size=”40″] A great deal of digging through dusty files (by sports communications intern Brandon Weiss) revealed that the 63 combined fouls from Georgia’s season opener against Chattanooga is likely the most ever in a Bulldog basketball game.
[su_spacer size=”40″] UGA archives provide box scores beginning with the 1960-61 season. No game since then – all 1,649 of them from the start of the 1960-61 campaign through the matchup with the Mocs – featured as many as fouls.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In fact, only one contest featured 60 fouls.
[su_spacer size=”40″] On Feb. 17, 2007, Georgia and Auburn committed 27 and 33 infractions, respectively. The Bulldogs won that contest, 86-79. Sundiata Gaines flirted with a triple-double, finishing with game-high outputs of 21 points, nine rebounds and nine assists against the Tigers.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Whistles may be a more familiar sound this season as the NCAA emphasizes cleaning up the physicality of play, something Mark Fox is a proponent of.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “I thought it was a well-called game,” Fox said after the UTC contest. “The game is going to be officiated differently and as player and coaches we have to get used to that.”

And With Fouls Come…FTs

[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia made 45 trips to the free throw line against Chattanooga, equaling the ninth-most ever by the Bulldogs.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia also attempted 45 free throws against Tennessee on Jan. 27, 1990; at Mercer on Dec. 8, 1990; and versus Vanderbilt on Feb. 15, 2003.

A Challenging Non-Conference

[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia’s 2015-16 non-conference slate is challenging and balanced.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs’ 11 non-conference opponents averaged 19.3 wins last season and finished 2014-15 with an average NCAA rpi of 115.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “Our goal was a non-conference schedule that would put us in a proper position with the strength of schedule numbers at the end of the year,” Mark Fox said. “You never know what kind of season a team you play will have, but with the numbers from last year I think we’ve been able to establish the strength of schedule we need. It’s a little tougher numbers-wise than it was a year ago. That’s important when you get to the month of March.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Five of Georgia’s 11 non-conference opponents played into March last season: NCAA participants Baylor and Robert Morris, NIT quarterfinalist Murray State and CIT teams High Point and Oakland. Four of those teams will travel to Athens this season.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Last season’s average rpi of 115 is the best by Georgia’s non-conference foes since the Bulldogs’ 2001-02 non-conference foes recorded an average rpi of 111 during 2000-01.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Nine of 11 the Bulldogs’ non-conference foes ranked No. 153 or better in the final NCAA rpi for the 2014-15 season, and Georgia’s 2015-16 slate includes only one team that finished with an rpi in the 200s.
