The Georgia men’s golf team is in fifth place and 8 shots back of the lead after one round of the Puerto Rico Classic.

The Bulldogs finished Sunday’s round at the Rio Mar Beach Resort and Spa with a 4-under-par 284. Georgia currently trails leader Alabama by a margin of eight strokes. The Puerto Rico Classic is the opening event of the spring portion of Georgia’s schedule.

Senior Sepp Straka paced the Bulldogs with a 2-under 70. He is tied for 11th place, three strokes in back ofAlabama’s Jonathan Hardee.

The Bulldogs also got 1-under 71s from senior Lee McCoy and sophomore Zach Healy, as well as an even 72 from junior Greyson Sigg. Junior Jaime Lopez Rivarola had Georgia’s non-counting score of 2-over 74.

“We need to see some putts fall early,” Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. “We hit it pretty good today, but didn’t make a lot of key putts. Otherwise, we would be about five or six shots better. But there are two more rounds, and we certainly feel like we can get it going and shoot some low scores if the weather stays good.”

The Puerto Rico Classic will continue Monday and will conclude on Tuesday.
