Georgia’s Lee McCoy has been named the Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Week, according to an announcement Wednesday from the league’s office. Taylor Moore of Arkansas was also honored.
McCoy, a senior from Clarkesville, Ga., came in second individually as he led the Bulldogs to a team victory in the Querencia Cabo Intercollegiate in Mexico on Tuesday. With a three-round total of 8-under 205, McCoy finished just one shot back of the individual title. He was under-par in each round, following up a first-round 2-under 69 with a pair of 3-under 68s.
Thanks in large part to a 16-under 268 in the second round, Georgia was able to hold off the rest of the field and win the team tournament by a margin of ten strokes over South Florida. The win in Cabo gave the Bulldogs their first victory of the 2015-16 season.
McCoy now has a scoring average of 69.87 with three top-five finishes on the season. He moved up to No. 8 in the latest edition of the GolfStat rankings, while as a team, the Bulldogs jumped up to occupy the No. 2 spot.
McCoy and the Bulldogs will be back in action March 14 when they host the Southern Intercollegiate at Athens Country Club.
