RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — The Georgia men’s golf team is in eighth place after one round of the Puerto Rico Classic.
On Sunday on Rio Mar Country Club’s par-71, 6,716-yard Ocean Course, the Bulldogs fired a 4-over 288. Oklahoma secured the team lead at 10-under 274.
Senior Zach Healy and sophomore Trevor Phillips paced the Bulldogs on Sunday as they each signed for a 1-under 70. North Carolina State’s Stephen Franken set the individual pace with a tournament-record 9-under 62.
Junior David Mackey added an even-par 71 for Georgia, sophomore Spencer Ralston posted a 6-over 77 and freshman Davis Thompson had the Bulldogs’ non-counting score of 9-over 80.
In the Puerto Rico Individual Classic on Rio Mar’s par-72, 6,902-yard River Course, freshman John Hilliard Catanzaro fired a 3-over 75 to land in ninth. Oklahoma’s Rylee Reinerston opened the event with a 4-under 68.
The Puerto Rico Classic will continue on Monday and will conclude on Tuesday with 8 a.m. shotgun starts. The Bulldogs will be paired with Alabama and Middle Tennessee State in second round.
