Georgia junior Austin Smith won his opening round match at the NCAA Championships as the individual portion of the tournament began Wednesday at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Smith (30) advanced to the second round with a 6-2, 7-6(1) win over South Florida’s Roberto Cid (21). He will take on Louisville’s fifth-seeded Sebastian Stiefelmeyer on Thursday. The junior from Cumming, Ga., will also play in the doubles bracket as the No. 1 seed with Ben Wagland.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “Winning in two sets was nice,” Smith said. “I started running out of gas there a little in the second set. I’ll rest up and get ready for a real big day tomorrow with singles and doubles.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Nathan Pasha (31) and Wayne Montgomery (24) were eliminated in the first round as Pasha fell to Georgia Tech’s Christopher Eubanks (53) 7-5, 6-3, and TCU’s Guillermo Nunez (59) rallied to beat Montgomery, 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2.

[su_spacer size=”40″] In the women’s bracket, Georgia senior Lauren Herring – seeded fifth – dropped her first round match to Miami’s Sinead Lohan (37), 6-1, 6-4. Herring finishes her career with 120 singles wins. She has 237 career combined singles/doubles victories, ranking second in the UGA record books. Herring will open play in the doubles championship with Ellen Perez on Thursday.
