[su_spacer size=”20″] Georgia senior Austin Smith reached the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships with a pair of wins Saturday at the Ring Tennis Complex at Linder Stadium.
Smith will take on Florida’s Elliott Orkin on Sunday for a spot in the semifinals later in the day.

The Bulldog doubles teams of Austin Smith/Ben Wagland and Wayne Montgomery/Emil Reinberg won their matches to reach Sunday’s quarterfinal round. The singles and doubles winners from all 12 regional sites will earn bids to the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York Nov. 12-15.

“Today our guys showed a lot of toughness and played some outstanding tennis,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “I am proud of the way they bounced back from a difficult day yesterday. All of our guys played well, especially Austin in singles. Our freshmen won four singles matches, and we had some great doubles, highlighted by Wayne (Montgomery) and Emil (Reinberg) defeating a team from Florida. We are looking forward to tomorrow’s challenges.”

Bulldog senior Nick Wood lost his second round match to Florida State’s 25th-ranked Benjamin Lock 6-0, 7-5. In the consolation draw Georgia was a perfect 5-0. Walker Duncan and Reinberg each won a pair of matches, while Wagland won his second round match following a first round bye.

In doubles, Smith and Wagland blanked Georgia State’s Jannie Koeke and Felipe Jaworski 8-0, while Montgomery and Reinberg downed Florida’s 12th-ranked team of Maxx Lipman and Elliott Orkin 8-7(7). Duncan and Wood fell to Georgia Tech’s Christopher Eubanks and Nathan Rakitt 8-4.

Sunday’s schedule includes singes consolation quarterfinals at 9 a.m., followed by main draw semifinals. There will be two rounds of singles and one round of doubles on Sunday.
