Five players from the UGA men’s tennis team will compete for individual championships in the NCAAs in both the singles and doubles brackets. Wayne Montgomery, Nathan Ponwith and Emil Reinberg will compete in the NCAA Singles Championship, while Jan Zielinski and Robert Loeb are seeded No. 1 in the doubles tournament. Singles play begins Wednesday, with doubles play to follow Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Pairings for the 64-player singles draw and the 32-team doubles championship were announced on Tuesday. Reinberg will be the first singles player in action for Georgia, taking on Ohio State’s 7th-seeded Hugo Di Feo at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Ponwith will be next, playing Piotr Baranski from Southern Illinois at 1:30 p.m., followed by Montgomery, who plays Tom Fawcett of Stanford, the No. 8 seed.
All three players from Georgia playing in the singles tournament received All-SEC honors, with Ponwith and Montgomery landing on the First Team and Reinberg being placed on the Second Team. Ponwith was named the SEC Freshman of the Year following a season that saw him break the record for Freshman of the Week honors with five. Montgomery made it to the Round of 32 in last year’s singles tournament before falling to Virginia’s Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, who Montgomery got the better of in their most recent meeting, at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships in November. Reinberg leads the Bulldogs with 34 singles wins this year, including 10 in 13 completed matches at the No. 3 court.
The duo from Georgia competing in the doubles tournament will take on the Ohio State pair of Di Feo and Martin Joyce in the first round. Loeb and Zielinski secured All-America honors by being seeded No. 1 and are the second Bulldog tandem in three years to earn the top seed, joining Ben Wagland and Austin Smith in 2015. Previously, the last Georgia duo to earn the No. 1 overall seed was John Isner and Luis Flores in 2007. Loeb and Zielinski are 24-11 overall this season, including a 4-0 mark against pairs ranked in the top five. Both Loeb, a freshman, and Zielinski, a sophomore, were named to the 2017 All-SEC First Team.
