Five members of the Georgia men’s tennis team will play in the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships Oct. 5-12 at Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Pre-qualifying rounds concluded on Sunday, and qualifying matches are slated for Monday through Wednesday. A field of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams will then compete in the main draw beginning on Thursday.

Ben Wagland, Nick Wood and Walker Duncan will open play in the qualifying portion, while Austin Smith and Wayne Montgomery have secured spots in the main draw. Smith and Wagland will also begin doubles play in the main draw.

About the All-American Championships: The All-American Championships is the second national championship tournament of the 2015-16 season, and this is the 11th consecutive year that the Univ. of Tulsa has played host to the event. Tulsa will also be the site of the 2016 NCAA Championships in May. Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic bids to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 12-15 in New York.

UGA’s history at the All-American Championships: Stanford has the most singles titles with six, while Georgia is second with five. The last Bulldog to win the singles title in Tulsa was Travis Helgeson in 2007, which marked the third straight year a Georgia player reached the finals of All-Americans as John Isner won the title in 2005 and advanced to the final again in 2006. Also in 2006, Isner and Luis Flores won the doubles title. In 2011, Wil Spencer reached the singles final, while Ignacio Taboada and Sadio Doumbia reached the doubles semifinals. Last year, Nathan Pasha reached the quarterfinals of the main draw, and Smith reached the quarterfinals in 2014.
