The Georgia men’s tennis team advanced five singles players and all four doubles pairs to the Round of 16 at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Friday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Senior Andy Martinez notched the first win of the 2017 lid-lifter with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Giles Hussey of Georgia State. Sophomore Robert Loeb followed suit with a 6-2, 6-1 cruise over Quentin Coulaud of Georgia State.
The Georgia trend continued as junior Walker Duncan ousted Nico Guillon of Mercer in two sets, 6-2, 6-3, before senior Wayne Montgomery came back from a 3-6 loss to take the final two 6-2, 6-4 over Virginia Tech’s Carlo Donato.
Junior Jan Zielinski only needed a pair of 6-1, 6-2 sets to overtake ETSU’s Robert Herrera, as junior Emil Reinberg capped the Georgia wins on day one 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 over Ole Miss’ Felip Kraljevic.
It took three sets to take down redshirt sophomore Alex Phillips by Tennessee Tech’s Edu Mens, the four seed, and sophomore Nathan Ponwith by Ole Miss’ Zvonimir Babic. Sophomore Sam Dromsky also fell to ETSU’s David Gonzalez.
On the doubles side, tied at seven all, the tandem of Alex Phillips and Andy Martinez defeated Fermin Calvo and Lucas DeTorres Curth of Kennesaw State with a 10-3 tiebreaker. The remaining Georgia doubles duos advanced to the Round of 16 with byes, including 2016 NCAA Championship runners-up Jan Zielinski and Robert Loeb.
The singles Round of 16 will be played on today, beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET, followed by the quarterfinals. The doubles frame will begin at 9:00 a.m. this morning, with the quarterfinals at 10:15 a.m.
