Three Georgia men’s tennis players advanced to the semifinals of the 2017 Battle in the Bay Classic on Saturday.
All four Georgia competitors continued through the Round of 16 this afternoon in straight sets. Junior Walker Duncan ousted Portland’s Mathieu Garcia 6-3, 6-4, while freshman Nathan Ponwith overtook San Diego’s Guilherme Osorio in the same 6-3, 6-4 fashion.
Junior Emil Reinberg and senior Wayne Montgomery followed with respective wins over California’s JT Nishimura 7-5, 6-4 and Pepperdine’s Brian Berdusco 6-3, 6-2.
The quarterfinals featured three-set contests for Ponwith, Reinberg and Montgomery. After dropping the first set 2-6, Ponwith defeated UC Santa Barbara’s Nicolas Moreno de Alboran 6-3, 6-3 in the remaining frames. Montgomery also used the final two 6-4, 7-5 sets to overcome a 1-6 first set with TCU’s Alastair Gray.
Reinberg won 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 against University of Southern California’s Jack Jaede, while Walker Duncan fell to Alexander Rybakov 6-3, 6-2.
Montgomery faced a third opponent on Saturday in a shootout to earn a wildcard spot in the Tiburon Challenger next week. The winner of the finals on Sunday earns a wildcard to the Fairfield Challenger in two weeks.
