TULSA, Okla——The Georgia men’s tennis team fell in its three main draw matches at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships Friday at Tulsa’s Case Tennis Center.
[su_spacer size=”20″] In the consolation draw, Austin Smith won his opening round match against Tulane’s Constantin Schmitz, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, and he will face Christian Seraphim of Wake Forest in the second round Saturday at 10 a.m. ET.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In main draw action, Wayne Montgomery fell to San Diego’s Uros Petronijevic 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3, while Walker Duncan dropped his second round match to Stanford’s Tom Fawcett 6-4, 6-2. Duncan had played four matches in each of the last four days, including a trio of three-setters.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In doubles, the top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Bulldog team of Smith and Ben Wagland lost to Ohio State’s Martin Joyce and Ralf Steinbach 6-1, 6-2.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “We fought hard in singles and just got one of three today,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “In doubles we just ran into a team that was red hot and played outstanding, but we didn’t help ourselves either. Our hunger and our resolve as a group is being tested and we need to bounce back with a good week of practice and show what we can do at Regionals next weekend and the rest of the fall.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] The consolation champion will earn an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York, and Smith is currently in the round of 16.
