SAN FRANCISCO — Wayne Montgomery won the singles titles at the 2017 Battle in the Bay Classic, but he was not the only Georgia men’s tennis player to make noise on the final day of the three-day event in California.
Montgomery’s 6-4, 6-3 victory in the all-Georgia final against teammate Nathan Ponwith put the finishing touches on another successful day out West for the Bulldogs. In all, Georgia had three players advance to the semifinals and a pair of ranked wins to highlight the day.
“It was a great week for our guys,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “Nathan picked up a really big win today against a very good singles player in Alex Rybakov from TCU. Obviously, when you have two guys make the finals it means we played really well to get to that point. I am proud of Wayne for winning the singles title and pleased with how all of our guys competed and improved over the last three days.”
Ponwith advanced to Sunday’s finals with a back-and-forth match against the nation’s No. 12 ranked Alexander Rybakov from TCU. The Georgia sophomore won a first-set tiebreaker before falling in the second set. In the third, Ponwith forced another tiebreaker and came out on top 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (8).
That was not the only ranked win for the Bulldogs on Sunday. Bulldog junior Walker Duncan was impressive with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (8) victory over No. 82 Jack Jaede from USC during a consolation match.
Georgia was well represented in the Final Four, but it is Montgomery who will head back to Athens with the singles championship. Montgomery’s path took a familiar turn as he first went through teammate Emil Reinberg, 6-4, 6-1, in the semis before his win against Ponwith.
Next up on Georgia’s schedule, the Bulldogs get set for the ITA All-America Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
