The No. 11 Georgia Bulldogs men’s tennis team defeated the East Tennessee State Buccaneers by a 4-0 score on Saturday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in the first round of the NCAA men’s tennis championship.

“It is certainly great to get a 4-0 win,” said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. “I think it’s easy to be satisfied, but I know that we can play a little bit better.

Trent Bryde and Tyler Zink, the seventh-ranked doubles pairing in the country, won their set on court 1, 6-1. Phillip Henning and Erik Grevelius also took care of business on court 3, winning the set 6-4 to secure the doubles point for Georgia.

Diaz said he thought the team started out well in singles play. The Bulldogs won five out of six first sets in singles. The star of the day was Henning on court three, who dominated in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-0. He was assertive with his shots and rarely made any unforced errors. Henning won his 19th singles match of the year, leading the Bulldogs in that category.

“When we play doubles together, I can tell when he’s going to have a good day,” said Grevelius on Henning. “I felt today he was playing very well in doubles… obviously its fun when your doubles partner can play well and we can both win our doubles and singles too.”

The lower courts then brought the Bulldogs to victory after Georgia fell behind in the second sets on courts 1 and 2. Blake Croyder won 6-3, 6-1 on court 4. Finally, Grevelius closed out his match on court 6 to clinch the win for UGA. He won by a 6-3, 6-2 score.

The Bulldogs will now host the second round at 1 p.m. on Sunday where they will face the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Diaz made it clear that his team will need to be focused immediately on that matchup.

“We don’t really have the time to enjoy this very much,” said Diaz. “Our eyes are on tomorrow’s match already, so it’s just a turn the page and keep ready for tomorrow.”
