Georgia men’s tennis junior Jan Zielinski picked up his third win over a ranked opponent within the span of a week to highlight the Bulldogs’ final day at the 2017 International Tennis Hall of Fame ITA Grass Court Invitational.
Zielinski, who defeated teammate Wayne Montgomery (ranked 21st) at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships and ousted Illinois’ 31st-ranked Aron Hiltzik on Friday, took a 7-6 (2), 6-2 victory against 73rd-ranked Jackie Tang from Columbia on Sunday.
“I’m very happy with how Jan finished the tournament today,” associate head coach Jamie Hunt said. “I told him if he keeps improving at this rate he’ll be back playing the ATP tournament before he knows it. Alex came up short in the finals but did a lot of positive things. We are getting better. Each guy improved on the things we needed to from our last tournament and will now enjoy some time off before getting back to work. A big thank you to Todd Martin and his staff for putting on a first-class event.”
Zielinski was not the only Bulldog to have a solid week. Teammate Alex Phillips moved into the finals of his draw with a 2-0 start to the weekend. Phillips fell just short on Sunday, however, with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Caleb Chakravarthi from Illinois.
The Bulldogs now prepare for the Battle of the Bay Tournament, which begins this Friday in San Francisco.
