Currently riding a six-match win streak and the momentum of an impressive victory against No. 4 Ohio State, the UGA men’s tennis team moved up eight spots to No. 11 in the latest ITA Tennis rankings, it was announced on Tuesday.
Highlighting Georgia’s individual rankings is the doubles team of freshman Jan Zielinski and redshirt sophomore Paul Oosterbaan, who moved to No. 58 in the latest poll after being unranked last week. Zielinski and Oosterbaan have won four matches in a row, including a 6-3 victory against Ohio State’s 13th-ranked tandem of Relf Steinbach and Martin Joyce in their last outing.
Teammates Ben Wagland and Austin Smith maintained their No. 5 spot in the doubles rankings. The Bulldog duo currently boasts a 10-3 record in dual match play this season.
“This is a natural progression following what was a terrific win against a great Ohio State team this past Sunday,” head coach Manny Diaz said. “Our guys are playing really well right now and we are focused on the two important SEC matches we have this weekend here in Athens. I’m happy with the way our team is playing, and I look forward to continuing that as we get back into SEC play.”
The latest singles rankings featured three Georgia players as sophomore Wayne Montgomery, who went 2-0 last week, leads the Bulldogs with a No. 34 national ranking. Smith is at No. 35, while freshman Walker Duncan comes in at No. 120.
Georgia takes its six-match win streak into battle with Tennessee and No. 18 Kentucky this weekend. The Bulldogs will face the Volunteers at 5 p.m. ET on Friday and will host the Wildcats at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
