Nathan Ponwith, the No. 1-ranked player in the country according to tennisrecruiting.net, has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Georgia and play tennis for the Bulldogs, head coach Manuel Diaz announced Thursday.

Ponwith joins Robert Loeb in the Georgia signing class thus far. The early signing period continues through Nov. 18.

“Nathan is a fantastic addition to our squad,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “He brings outstanding results at the highest level. He is a great kid with an outstanding future who will fit in very well with our guys.”

A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Ponwith was among the top-50 amateur players in the world who competed in the International Spring Championship, reaching the semifinals in Los Angeles. Ponwith won matches earlier this year at the French Open Junior Championships and the Wimbledon Junior Championships. He also played in the U.S. Open Junior Tournament in September.

“What brought me to UGA were the coaches and teammates,” Ponwith said. “The atmosphere in Athens is also unique, and I want to be a part of that.”

Ponwith reached a career-high junior ITF ranking of No. 23 in January. He also reached the singles quarterfinals and won the doubles title at the Easter Bowl in Indian Wells in April.
