Georgia junior men’s tennis player Walker Duncan won two matches on Tuesday to earn one of 16 spots from the qualifying round into the main draw of the 2017 Saint Francis ITA All-American Championships.

 
Duncan will now join Bulldog singles players Wayne Montgomery, Nathan Ponwith and Emil Reinberg in the 64-player singles field, while the Georgia duos of Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski, as well as Ponwith and Reinberg, will play in the main doubles draw. Competition is scheduled to start on Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
 
 
On Tuesday, Duncan downed 61st-ranked Catalin Mateas from Duke, 6-2, 7-6 (6) in the second round. He then split the first two sets against Wisconsin’s Chema Carranza before the two went to a third-set tiebreaker. Duncan jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker and hung on for a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory.
 
 
“I am very proud of Walker for earning one of 64 spots in the main draw,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “Having to win two matches in one day can test you physically, but Walker just kept competing and looked really good all day. He will get to rest up a little bit and will be ready to go on Thursday.”
 
 
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, Georgia players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California.
