Georgia freshman Walker Duncan advanced to the final qualifying round of the All-American Championships with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(6) win over Virginia’s No. 125 Mac Styslinger Tuesday at Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Duncan will take on Liberty’s Sam Matheson on Wednesday with a spot in the main draw on the line.

For the second consecutive day, Duncan saved two match points en route to a third set victory. He will look to join senior Austin Smith and sophomore Wayne Montgomery in the main draw.

“Waker showed some great poise for the second day in a row,” said associate head coach Bo Hodge. “He is really coming into his own and starting to trust what we have been working on. He will get some treatment and rest up for his match tomorrow.”

In other action, Ben Wagland fell to Ohio State’s Matt Mendez 7-6(3), 6-1, while Nick Wood dropped his second round match to South Florida’s Dominic Cotrone 6-1, 6-4.

“Ben was up in the first set of his match today and just let his opponent back in it,” Hodge said. “He will learn that when he has his opponent on the ropes, he has to put him away. Nick ran into someone who just played better than he did today. He competed hard and has a firm understanding of what he needs to continue to work on.”

Following Wednesday’s final round of qualifying matches, main draw action gets underway on Thursday. Georgia will also be represented in the doubles draw by No. 1-ranked Smith and Wagland.
