Georgia’s Davis Thompson is the top-ranked male in the new World Amateur Golf Ranking, which was released on Wednesday.

“It’s really an honor to be recognized as No. 1 in the world,” Thompson said. “I just want to keep working as hard as I can and not worry about it too much. I just want to go play golf and have fun. If I do those things, the rest will take care of itself.”

Thompson supplanted fellow American Ricky Castillo of Florida in the top spot. Chinese Taipei’s

Chun An Yu of Arizona State remained No. 3, followed by American John Pak of Florida State at No. 4, and Spain’s Eduard Rousaud Sabate at No. 5.

Thompson, a senior for the Bulldogs, opened 2020 by winning the Jones Cup Invitational. Thompson also placed in the top 10 in the North and South Amateur Championship and the Western Amateur Championship and appeared in the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Collegiately in 2020, Thompson has come in fourth in the Blessings Intercollegiate, fifth in the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate, and sixth in both the Southern Highlands Collegiate and the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. He finished the fall with a scoring average of 68.67, including his final six rounds all in the 60s.

Thompson is slated to play in the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic next week on St. Simons Island thanks to his Jones Cup victory. He will be appearing in the RSM Classic for the second straight year. Thompson played earlier this year in the Puerto Rico Open and the U.S. Open.

Thompson excels off the course as well. He was chosen as the male recipient of the Joel Eaves Award as the Georgia student-athlete with the highest GPA entering his senior year and he earned a Ramsey Scholarship for Academic & Athletic Excellence.
