Senior golfer Davis Thompson will represent the University of Georgia and the United States this week in the Arnold Palmer Cup.

The event will take place Monday through Wednesday at Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Fla. Originally scheduled to be played July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland, the event was postponed and relocated due to the coronavirus. The inaugural Arnold Palmer Cup was staged at Bay Hill Club & Lodge in 1997.

The Arnold Palmer Cup uses a Ryder Cup-style format and pits American collegiate golfers against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland. The United States leads the all-time series 12-10-1.

“Anytime you can represent your country, it’s an awesome honor,” Thompson said. “I’m just humbled and appreciative to be part of this. I’m thankful that my hard work is paying off. I’m trying not to get too high or too low. I’m just going to play my game. You’ve got to play the golf course and not your emotions. You have to play your own game and try to be the best you can that day.”

Thompson is No. 1 among Americans and No. 2 overall in the current World Amateur Golf Ranking. He ended the fall’s collegiate schedule with an SEC-leading 68.67 scoring average and top-6 decisions in all three tournaments. Thompson excels off the course as well. He was chosen as the male recipient of the Joel Eaves Award as the Georgia student-athlete with the highest GPA entering his senior year and he earned a Ramsey Scholarship for Academic & Athletic Excellence.

Georgia has a strong history with the Arnold Palmer Cup, which launched in 1997. Coach Chris Haack captained the 2002 and 2006 U.S. squads. Nick Cassini, Brian Harman, Russell Henley, Chris Kirk, and Adam Mitchell each played twice, while Erik Compton, Ryan Hybl, Lee McCoy, and Michael Morrison all played once.
