Georgia junior Davis Thompson won the 2020 Jones Cup Invitational on Sunday at Ocean Forest Golf Club and earned a spot in the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic.
Thompson ended up at 13-under 203 for the tournament, including a blistering 7-under 65 in the final round Sunday. Thompson was nine shots clear of runner-up David Perkins (4-under 212) and 10 ahead of third-place finisher Jackson Suber (3-under 213).
Thompson and Perkins were the only players in the 84-man field to shoot par or better for all three rounds. Thomson had loops of 2-under 70, 4-under 68, and the 7-under 65.
On Sunday, Thompson had a bogey-free day with seven birdies. He posted five straight birdies over Nos. 7 through 11 to take control of the tournament.
“It means the world to me to win the Jones Cup,” Thompson said. “This is such a prestigious tournament with an incredible legacy. I’m really happy with the way I played. I was lucky today to get some early birdies and then I kept my foot on the gas. I think this can be a springboard for me heading into the spring.”
The 2020 RSM Classic will take place Nov. 19-22 at Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simons Island. Sea Island is the longtime host of the Southeastern Conference Championship.
Thompson will be playing in the RSM Classic for the second straight time. He was the runner-up following a playoff with Akshay Bhatia in the Jones Cup Invitational a year ago. After Bhatia turned pro and gave up his amateur status, Thompson was extended the sponsor exemption to the PGA Tour event, where he came in 23rd at 10-under.
Also Sunday, Georgia senior Spencer Ralston took 55th at 12-over 228, while freshman Connor Creasy came in 69th at 17-over 233.
The Bulldogs will open the spring portion of their schedule Feb. 16-18 in the Puerto Rico Classic.
