Georgia’s Trent Phillips was named to the National All-Freshmen Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Wednesday.

Phillips, a native of Inman, S.C., previously was selected as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year (the eighth in Georgia history) and was named to the All-SEC First Team and to the All-Freshmen Team.

Phillips came in eighth individually at the NCAA Championships earlier this week. He finished in the top 10 in seven tournaments, highlighted by a second-place showing in the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate. Phillips placed in the top 20 in 11 of the Bulldogs’ 12 tournaments.

Phillips capped the season with a 70.40 scoring average, earning the team’s Dick Copas Award as the Bulldog with the best average. His 70.40 trailed only the 70.00 and 70.08 averages posted by Lee McCoy in 2016 and 2015, respectively, in the Georgia record book.

Phillips posted an 8-under 64 round and a 15-under 201 total in The Carmel Cup in his Georgia debut. The 8-under matched the second-lowest loop and the 15-under tied the third-lowest total in school history. Twenty-six of Phillips’ 35 rounds were par or better, including 19 in the 60s. He opened his collegiate career with 10 straight rounds in the 60s.

Phillips was named to the Ben Hogan Award and the Haskins Award watch lists and was chosen as one of the semifinalists for the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award presented by Barbasol. He participated in a United States Walker Cup practice session in December.
