Trent Bryde, a sophomore on the Georgia men’s tennis team, has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Bryde continued the impressive start to his second collegiate season with a win against Texas’ No. 2-ranked Yuya Ito at the No. 1 singles court. Ito entered the contest against Bryde with a 21-1 overall record and had only lost four total singles matches dating back to the 2019 dual-match season.
“Trent had a terrific match on Saturday,” head coach Manuel Diaz. “We have tremendous respect for Yuya Ito, who is one of the best players in the country. To beat someone of his caliber is a testament to Trent and the improvements he continues to make on the court. The sky is the limit, and we look forward to all the great things he is going to accomplish in his career.”
Bryde recorded his third win against a top-15 opponent with a 7-6 (1), 6-4 triumph against Ito. Earlier this spring, Bryde defeated Giovanni Oradini from Mississippi State in the ITA Kick-Off after he ousted Texas’ Christian Sigsgaard back on Jan. 11.
The Suwanee, Ga., native plays both No. 1 singles and doubles. He is currently ranked No. 28 nationally in singles and boasts a 3-1 record during the spring.
Bryde and the Bulldogs host Florida Atlantic on Feb. 24 at the newly-renovated Dan Magill Tennis Complex. That match marks the first of six-straight home contests for the Bulldogs.
