A road trip to defending national champion Texas, a March contest against Ohio State and 10 home events highlight the University of Georgia men’s tennis team’s 2019-20 schedule, head coach Manuel Diaz announced on Monday.
The Bulldogs will host one fall tournament — the Southern Intercollegiate Championships — the weekend of Sept. 27-29 in Athens.
Georgia begins the spring season on Jan. 10-12 at the Miami (Fla.) Invitational, before heading to Starkville, Miss., to join Mississippi State, Oklahoma and South Carolina for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Coach Diaz and his team will then play at Georgia Tech on Feb. 2 and at Texas on Feb. 8.
“Our guys report back this week, and we are so excited about this upcoming season,” Diaz said. “We have a lot of improvements to make and will spend the next few weeks getting our new guys acclimated to college life. This schedule is tough and challenging, but will be a great opportunity for our team. We are ready to get to work.”
Following the ITA Indoor National Championships in Madison, Wisc., Georgia ends the month of February and enters the first week of March with six consecutive home matches, with three of those contests (Tennessee, Ohio State and Mississippi State) against teams that finished 15th or higher in the final 2019 rankings.
Georgia then hits the road to play Florida on March 13, South Carolina on March 15, Alabama on March 20 and Auburn on March 22. The Bulldogs’ final home contest comes against Texas A&M on April 10.
The Bulldogs return eight players to go along with a top-5 signing class this season. Joining Georgia’s roster will be highly-touted freshmen Baptiste Anselmo, Erik Grevelius, Mateo Reyes and Tyler Zink.
Georgia’s home matches will be played at the new, $8.5 million Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The facility is currently undergoing a major renovation ahead of the spring slate.
