Tyler Zink, an All-American on the Georgia men’s tennis team, has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Region Rookie of the Year, it was announced on Monday.
The Bradenton, Fla., native had an impressive freshman season in Athens. He played at the No. 2 and 3 singles spots, earning a 9-4 record and No. 80 national ranking. The two-time SEC Freshman of the Week won six of his first seven collegiate singles contests and then delivered the crucial match-clinching win against No. 10 Tennessee on Feb. 28.
In doubles, Zink earned All-America status with teammate Trent Bryde as the two finished with an 8-2 mark.
“Tyler is the complete package and mature beyond his years,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “He was in the midst of a very special season and played an important role in nearly all the big wins we had. Tyler is going to continue to get better and better. I can’t wait to see what’s next for him over the next three seasons.
Zink helped the Bulldogs to a 9-2 overall record, including a 3-0 edge against SEC foes. Georgia finished the year on a six-match win streak.
