Hamish Stewart — Tulane’s No. 1 singles player who is currently ranked No. 29 nationally — will transfer to the University of Georgia men’s tennis program, head coach Manuel Diaz announced Thursday.
The Glasgow, Scotland, native will have one year of eligibility remaining as a graduate transfer during the 2021-22 season.
Stewart has put together an impressive career during his four years with the Green Wave. The 2020 Intercollegiate Association Southern Region Player to Watch and Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Year leads his team with a 10-3 record in singles, including four wins against ranked opponents this spring.
“Hamish is another outstanding addition to our program,” Diaz said. “He has a ton of experience playing at the No. 1 singles spot for a very good Tulane team. Hamish is just a tremendous young man who has not only won awards on the court but has also placed on the All-Academic Team. We are thrilled he has decided to be a Bulldog, and look forward to having him play here in Athens.”
In addition to his No. 29 ranking in singles, Stewart is also ranked No. 45 in doubles. He is the captain for his team, which currently boasts a 10-5 record and is coming off wins against SEC foes Auburn and LSU.
The right-handed Stewart was the LSWA Freshman of the Year in 2017-18, boasting an 18-8 overall singles record. He then earned American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors twice during his sophomore campaign with a team-high 41 combined singles and doubles victories. Last year, he went 16-7 in singles and was ranked in all five ITA national singles polls.
Stewart also placed on the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. He will graduate with a degree in finance and marketing at Tulane and will pursue a master’s degree in business analytics at UGA.
“The balance between athletics and academics was exactly what I was looking for, and I can’t wait to join such an amazing program in one of the strongest conferences in all of college tennis,” Stewart said. “I cannot wait to start working with Coach Diaz and Jamie because of the reputation they have in college tennis.”
Stewart is the fifth signee of Georgia’s 2021 class. He joins Notre Dame graduate transfer Tristan McCormick and incoming freshmen Miguel Perez Peña, Thomas Paulsell and Mathis Debru.
